Description
This expansion requires the base game to be played!
In a war, not only the strength of you warriors counts. The power is where the gold is. Hundreds of neutral soldiers are waiting for gold to fight on your side in return.
This expansion contains the following new cards:
- Lady Aethelflaed of Mercia
- King Sweyn Forkbeard
- Mercenary Archers
- Mercenary Horsemen
- Mercenary Spearmen
- Mercenary Swordsmen
With the Mercenary Expansion, a new game mechanism is added to Runes of Mayhem, allowing you to play neutral units. These mercenary units are not to be shuffled into your decks, they can be hired from a ‘Mercenary Camp‘ situated next to the battlefield. The hired mercenary units are placed under the control of the hiring player and they join his/her army. However, once their service is over, they are demanding their pay. And if there is no gold to pay? They will take what you own them.
Runes of Mayhem was successfully funded on Kickstarter with the help of 410 backers. Thank you very much!
New mechanism: The player may hire one mercenary unit once per turn, placing it into his or her own side of the Battlefield. When a hired mercenary unit gets defeated and leaves the game, the player has to pay its cost in gold. If the player is unable to, then his or her Fortress suffers damage.
By using clever tactics, hiring the right type of mercenaries can be very handy in empowering your army, creating formations to cross your opponent’s plans and protect your Fortress. Hire mercenaries at the right moment, and you won’t have problems paying their cost.

This expansion contains two new rulers: King Sweyn Forkbeard and Lady Aethelflaed of Mercia! They both have special abilities connected to the Mercenary Expansion.
King Sweyn Forkbeard, ruler of Denmark between 986 and 1014. The Christian King Harald Bluetooth, his father baptized him. Later he revolted against his father, seized the throne and reverted back to the old pagan ways. He was a talented ruler, who claimed all of Norway to himself. He attacked and eventually captured all England, establishing the seeds of what later became the North Sea Empire of Canute the Great. Much to his unluck – five weeks after capturing the lands of the Anglo-Saxons, he fell from his horse and died.
Lady Aethelflaed of Mercia was a strong, independent and well-educated lady. She was born as the eldest daughter of Alfred the Great. Aethelflaed ruled over Mercia after his husband’s death between 911 to 918. She was the only female ruler in the recorded Anglo-Saxons history. After King Alfred’s death, Aethelflaed’s older brother, Edward came to power and she supported him. Both stood for a unified, strong Anglo-Saxon England to fend off the Vikings.
